Florida Man Charged with Foreclosure Fraud
June 18, 2009
Authorities are now saying that a man who used to be a police officer, and who lives in South Florida used bogus paperwork to illegally evict individuals from their foreclosed homes and then rented them out. Using this scheme, the man was able to bring in almost $6,000 per month in rent money.
The man would often issue fake warrant deeds, giving him possession of the property, and a nonexistent legal justification, which he called “adverse possession.” He took around 30 houses for himself.
If the doors on the home were locked, he would break in through the windows and change the locks. He would even take doors entirely off of their hinges, and replace them with new doors and locks.
The man is being charged with an organized scheme to defraud, committing a criminal process under color of law, burglary and grand theft. Those with foreclosed homes are warned to beware of similar scams.
